5 Reasons Why I Hate October

There are twelve months in the year; 365 days. However, there are 31 consecutive days that I absolutely hate. Yes I realize hate is a strong word, and I think it adequately describes my detest of October.

  1. Experiment: type October into google images and what comes up? Who care's! It's all orange. ORANGE! ORANGE!!!! Of all the colours in the world, all the shades within the spectrum, orange is the ugliest colour of them all. I'm sorry to all of you who think orange is a phenomenal colour, but you're wrong. Orange is the colour that we all avoid. Have you ever seen someone and said "Hey! I love your orange shirt!!". No, you haven't. Having previously working in Price Chopper where the store colours were orange and blue, you already have a strong detest for that colour. But seriously, name something "good" that is orange... can't think of anything? Neither can I. And to make matters worse, orange cannot be paired with anything without having *negative* connotations. Orange and Green: you look like a pumpkin. Orange and Black: you're too eager for Halloween. Orange and Blue: Price Chopper. Orange and anything: ugly.
  2. If you actually did the google images experiment, you see a bunch of pictures of pumpkins. No I don't have anything against pumpkins, but "Jack-o-lanterns", yes I have a problem with you. First of all, WHAT A WASTE OF PUMPKIN!!! You spend good money ($2.99 this week at FreshCo) for a decent sized squash, and what do you do with it? You throw out all the insides, you know the part that's meant for eating, and keep the outer shell! The shell - the part that is completely useless! And then you have the audacity to carve "cute" little faces in the pumpkin. That is so much wasted effort. You don't carve faces into bananas or apples, so why are we defacing the poor pumpkin. What a total waste of time, money and pumpkin. Oh, and pumpkins stink... just sayin'.
  3. My third reason can get me into a bit of trouble. But I actually hate Halloween (and no, hate is not strong enough to describe it). My parents, thank the LORD, did not subject me to this stupid practise of begging. Yes, I had my share of dress up as a child, it was my favourite game, but this "Halloween" thing, didn't exist in my childhood. First of all it teaches your children begging and greed. They go door to door demanding candy from neighbours ("trick or treat" really means, give me candy or don't waste my time. No one wants a treat). Then it turns into a competition of greed and hoarding, who can get the most candy. I've always gotten my share of snack-sized candy and mini bags of chips that last no longer than a week during October, but I've never had to do this door-to-door soliciting for it. And I don't know about you, but I don't like being scared. I don't like bats or spiders or vampires and all that other nonsense. I don't like the dark. And I don't like orange. All of the uglinesses that October and Halloween in compass.
  4. Yes, I agree that the leaves changing colour is pretty (it's the only adjective I can think of), but it's a lot of work. I wasn't that kid who loved to jump in the leaves, because on what would have been my first experience of leave jumping, there was a truck load of bugs in our pile of leaves! After that, heck-to-the-no! But once you grow up, you can't enjoy those types of things anyway. Growing up means you have to rake those pretty leaves. So much work! And it always seems to come out of nowhere. You leave work and all is nice, come home and its the leafpocalypse. Didn't see that one coming did ya...
  5. Once October 1st rolls around you know summer is over and we're on the downward spiral to winter. I live in Canada. Winter is cold. I don't like it. Once October rolls around, the sun seems to peace out, nasty cold air rushes in, and this year, it rains- all.the.time! After the rain goes away, we always get a few days of nice weather and then BAM. snow... Ugh! Then the countdown begins till summer.
There are a plethora of additional reasons as to why I hate October. Every October first, I think "30 days till we put up our Christmas tree... how many days till Christmas". But it all comes down to this... October is awful because of ORANGE!!! UGH!

Am I Completely Oblivious?!?!

Call me old fashioned, but I really don't understand society today. Well actually, don't call me old fashioned, I'll be very offended, but regardless. Without getting completely into all that bewilders me (partially because I'm not ready for the flack I'd get), but how is it that nothing that was formally regarded as special or traditional or classy has gone out the window?

Society says you can do whatever you want without consequence, as long as it's not hurting anybody else. Marriage, what was once such a sacred commitment has now been dwindled down to "it's just a piece of paper". Uh no, no it's not just a piece of paper. If it were just a piece of paper, I don't think people would be fighting so hard for equality in marriage. No longer is marriage important since everyone can "live in sin" or do whatever else they want. Hey, we've made 16 and Pregnant one of MTV prime shows (not gonna lie, it is one of my favourites-- I'm fuelling what I despise). Even dating relationship have been degraded. Even in my own life, amongst my own friends, I feel like I'm behind, or a child, or a prude! But am I? Am I a sheltered prude for having values.

People get offended by the slightest things, and god forbid you deny them of one of their "rights", but who cares how anyone is treated. One can act any which way; sleeping around is "no big deal", drinking is just a normal part of being young, nothing has any importance or value.  Nothing is what it once was. I read the book Classy by Derek Blasberg, and his motto is classy not trashy. Most of his points seem like common sense, to me, but when I brought them up with some peers it's like alien!

Basically my rant has been a long time coming. Just in talking with friends, I feel either like a child or an 80 year old woman saying "KIDS THESE DAYS!" and shaking my fist. But, maybe I am. Maybe I just don't see things the way the world does, the way society wants us to think. When I say I don't like to go out, I mean it. I'm not thinking down on people who do, or think I'm better than them, I just think there are better things to do.

I was not the 19 year old who was beyond stoked to go and get wasted, or thrilled that I could go to bars. I'm just not that person. I'm the person that wonders what happened to society. I'm the person who watches old shows on TV Land or Deja Vu and thinks how simple things were and the vulgar things of those times are nothing today. Society has changed, but has it changed for the better? I don't think so. I think by the time my children are the age I am now, the world will be a bunch of chaotic, slutty, classless hell. What is the world coming to? I certainly don't want to find out.

Well there's my rant. Who knows. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm jaded.

An Open Letter to Whomever Will Get Me My Own Reality Show

Dear people of TLC, MTV, VH1, Ryan Seacrest, or whoever else produces reality shows,

It would be in your best interest and mine to give me the reality show I've been longing for for ages, for the following reasons:

1. I'm the same age as your target audience
I am 22. I'm not yet old enough to be a Real Housewife of Waterloo or to have my own show based on the life of me and my 15+ children, but I am at the prime age of life. Which shows are most popular with the prime demographic? The ones where the characters are barely over the legal drinking age, not bogged down with the burden of a real, full time career, and living life to the reality fullness. THAT'S SO ME! The boringness of high school is over, and the real drama of life has begun. Jersey Shore pretty much has the monopoly on the party scene, so for some diversity, call me up.

2. My life has so much drama, the world deserves to see
If we take the trip down memory lane, you could see nothing on MTV (pre-Jersey shore) had anything on my friends and I. Lauren Conrad had a love triangle with Stephan and Kristin? Pfft. At one point or another all of my best friends liked the same, "strawberry blonde" haired boy - who in my opinion was NOT worth it. Olivia Palermo stole Whitney's ideas and claimed them as her own? Um HI, story of my life. More he-said-she-said than you can deal with? Yup right here. And that's just the one side, I have yet touch the Price Chopper. Price Chopper alone should have a show called The Chop (or now that we're Fresh.Co, The Co?). There's so much drama, relationship nonsense, and filthy-hot-messes in my life to at least have a good 2 seasons, no?

3. You don't need writers, this kind of crazy can't be written
Although reality TV is supposed to be real, we all know it's been scripted beyond belief. But no writer can come up with the outrageous nonsense of my life. If you'd like, you can observe our goings on for a week. This stuff is good, you can't make it up. You can't even add to it to make it better. Besides, half the stuff on TLC isn't even real crazy, it's just everyday awkwardness that most people would die to admit. I, on the other hand, have no shame. However, if you must, I am beyond willing to let life be scripted, as long as I will get my own show...

4. If there The Hills, Jersey Shore, those stupid Paris Hilton shows and anything on TLC, I should have one too
Now I'm just saying, if you have allowed such shows to have such a long television run, really, I'm entitled to my own as well. I mean, 75% of The Hills is watching various characters sitting in a restaurant, pretending to eat salad, and gossiping over this week's drama. Jersey Shore is a group of raging alcoholics who are DTF and... well that's about it. Paris Hilton... nuff said! If an entire episode can be formed out of "YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID" "WHAT DID I DO?!" "YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID!", I think I can come up with something better than that.

5. People tell me all the time I should be famous or have my own show
Nuff said.

6. I am DESTINED to be famous
The gentlemen from Honor Society and everyone else has agreed. I am a people person - people want to be apart of this.

And I may not be as psycho high-strung as Kate Gosslin or have the awkwardness jealousy of the Sister Wives, but... well no, they've got me beat. But still!

If this made for good television, then COME ON!!

If these points are not valid enough for you to see I should have my own show, I have more. Please consider my request, or at least my request for a cooking show on Food Network.

Please, Hook me up!
